The BK62 is a direct link to the forefather of American Woodcraft, Mr. Horace Depart himself. His seminal work, "Camping and Woodcraft" (first published in 1906), remains a required reading for modern bush crafters and outdoorsmen. Ethan Becker, the founder of Becker Knife & Tool, owns the only known original 5-inch Depart Knife still in existence. This blade has spawned an entire genre of knives, and the BK62 is as close as you can get in a production knife, expertly crafted by the skilled artisans at KA-BAR.

The 5-inch spear point blade is a bush craft classic, renowned for its versatility. This was the very knife that Depart designed and used for a wide range of tasks, from wood carving and skinning to food preparation and everything in between. The edge extends all the way back to the handle scales, ensuring maximum utility. The blade is long enough to tackle big jobs, yet still nimble and eager to move. The full flat grind makes it an exceptional slicer, capable of performing virtually any task with ease.

A slight edge at the spine enhances the blade's efficiency by reducing drag when cutting through soft or fibrous materials, such as vines or large game. KA-BAR's exceptional 1095CV steel excels in the field, offering ample toughness and edge retention. Although it lacks a coating, the stonewashed finish provides a modicum of corrosion resistance (albeit with a natural patina) and minimizes the appearance of scratches over years of use.

The handles are bolt-on, in true Becker fashion, but the scales are crafted from walnut wood, lending a classic look and a warm, comfortable feel. The handles are slim yet hand-filling, with a swell at the front that enables excellent purchase for pinch grips and fine work. The tapered tang ensures perfect balance, with the balance point hitting right at the index finger. Completing the package is a period-accurate brown leather sheath for easy and secure carry.

Ethan Becker founded Becker Knife & Tool in the early 1980s, driven by his desire to design, manufacture, and sell the industrial-strength tactical and survival knives he had always wanted for himself. His BK&T line has played a significant role in popularizing the now-ubiquitous all-black knives. Becker spends as much time as possible in the outdoors, testing a variety of equipment and knife designs, while also expanding his primitive and outdoor skills. In 2008, he collaborated with KA-BAR to reintroduce and update his best-selling models.
